Drama in the ancient sea

The skeleton of an ancient sea turtle called an Archelon has been a favorite of Peabody Museum visitors for generations. Previously mounted vertically against a wall, Archelon now hangs from the ceiling in the museum's new central gallery. Observant patrons have long noticed that Archelon was missing its back right flipper; the new display pairs the turtle with a predator called Tylosaurus, as if to explain what might have happened to the appendage. (The Archelon fossil indicates that the wound healed and the turtle lived on for many years.)  |
