Throwback Thursday: ready for our close-up

Sixty years ago this week, a documentary about the Yale undergraduate experience premiered nationally on public television. To Be a Man (it was three years before coeducation) was commissioned by the university when Yale was overhauling its admissions process, and the film emphasizes academic and intellectual life over frat parties and sports. The film was admired for its objectivity and questioning self-criticism, and it was picked up by National Educational Television (the forerunner of PBS) for national distribution. The ad seen here appeared in our October 1966 issue.
