Five places in New Haven: the Green

Three hundred years ago this September, Yale held its first commencement in New Haven, as its new home at College and Chapel Streets was dedicated. This week, we’re celebrating with a look at iconic places in Yale’s hometown. And none is more iconic—and more intimately associated with Yale—than the New Haven Green (seen here in the fall). The center square of a nine-square town plan laid out in 1638, the Green has evolved from pasture to a public park over the centuries. For years, Yale commencements were held in Center Church on the Green, and the commencement procession still files past the church every year in tribute to that history.
