Constitutional law scholar joins faculty
Garrett West ’18JD joined the YLS faculty as an associate professor of law on July 1. West’s scholarly interests include torts, remedies, federal courts, and administrative law. His scholarship focuses on the uses of private law theory in public law and on the problems of constitutional interpretation and doctrinal coherence through constitutional change. West is currently an associate at Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison LLP, where he is a member of the firm’s Supreme Court and appellate litigation group in Washington, DC.
Program features democracy expert
The Crossing Divides program hosted Judge J. Michael Luttig in conversation with Dean Heather K. Gerken on February 20, to discuss the importance of working across ideological lines to uphold the rule of law. Judge Luttig served on the US Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit from 1991 to 2006. He cochairs the American Bar Association Task Force for American Democracy, whose mission is to boost voter confidence in elections and educate Americans on the foundational role of democracy and the rule of law in American life. Gerken was named to the Task Force in 2023.
Conference honors professor and the journal he helped inspire
This year marks 50 years of the student-led Yale Journal of International Law and the retirement of the professor who inspired his students to start the publication, Myres McDougal Professor Emeritus of Law W. Michael Reisman ’64LLM, ’65JSD. Reisman has written more than 30 books on public and private international law, jurisprudence, and human rights. To celebrate the anniversary and Reisman’s work, the Law School’s Center for Global Legal Challenges hosted a March conference that drew legal scholars from around the world to present research ranging from the Russia-Ukraine War to the use of coercive economic sanctions.
