US women’s soccer coach visits campus
The Chubb Fellowship hosted Jill Ellis, the winningest coach in the history of US Women’s Soccer, in February. Ellis spent the day meeting Yale women’s and men’s soccer coaches, team members, and members of Yale women’s club soccer. The main Chubb Fellowship event was held at the School of Management’s Zhang Auditorium. Vicky Chun, director of athletics, introduced Ellis, and Mary Lui, head of TD, led a discussion that followed Ellis’s journey into the world of soccer and coaching and to her latest endeavor as the president of the San Diego Wave of the National Women’s Soccer League. Timothy Dwight College hosted its second Chubb event, with award-winning writer Ta-Nehisi Coates, on April 5.
Trio brings new sound and vision to Schwarzman Center
Violinist Vijay Gupta ’07MusM and pianist Dominic Cheli ’16MusM, both of them members of the newly established Darshan Trio, returned to Yale in February with cellist Yoshika Masuda for two inspiring public performances at The Dome, located in Yale Schwarzman Center. By bringing together classical and contemporary music in an unconventional format—including two compositions by Reena Esmail ’18DMA—and delivering program notes from the stage, the trio created innovative listening experiences they refer to as a mosaic.
Sundance Festival features CCAM artist’s work
In January, Center for Collaborative Arts and Media (CCAM) director Dana Karwas attended the Sundance Film Festival, where she hosted a breakfast with Rashaad Newsome, whose work Being (the Digital Griot) was featured in Sundance’s New Frontier program. The work built on Newsome’s and CCAM’s collaboration as part of the center’s Fall 2023 Machine as Medium Symposium, where it presented his film Hands Performance. Newsome is the recipient of the 2023 Yale Racial Reckoning in Art and Performance Artist Fellowship.
