He was born in Pyongyang, Korea, as the son of the founder of the Presbyterian Church in Pyongyang and Northwestern Korea. After receiving his PhD in history, he and his wife worked as missionaries in China until they were forced out of the country by Chinese communists. He also served in Korea, as co-president of Korean Presbyterian Seminary He was a leading scholar of the history of Christianity in Asia, and has published multiple books on this subject.
