Balancing profits and the planet

The inaugural Yale Business and the Environment Conference drew more than 100 attendees to Yale SOM on February 8 to network and learn how businesses can balance operational growth with the urgent task of lowering greenhouse gas emissions. SOM’s Business and the Environment Club collaborated with the Business and the Environment Learning Community at the Yale School of the Environment to plan the event, which had the theme “Growth and Stewardship.” Attendees included students from Yale and other schools, as well as industry experts.

The conference featured three speaker panels on topics such as “Decarbonizing Today’s Operations,” “Beyond Carbon: Planetary Stewardship,” and “Growing in a Net-Zero Future.” Speakers came from a variety of organizations. Networking sessions, including 16 small-group coffee chats, gave students time to connect with each other and with the speakers.

Student team creates AI policy recommendations for Connecticut government

Research from Yale SOM will help Connecticut legislators draft regulations to guide the use of artificial intelligence in the state. The Yale AI Policy Student Team, an interdisciplinary group convened by SOM’s Chief Executive Leadership Institute, spent several weeks in January creating a comprehensive overview of the current AI regulatory frontier along with recommendations tailored to the state of Connecticut.

On January 24, just as the state legislature was beginning its new session, the team delivered a 50-slide presentation to Governor Ned Lamont ’80MBA and his cabinet. The legislature is developing guidelines for the fast-evolving AI space this year.
