Supporting planetary solutions research

This fall, the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences will establish a new doctoral fellowship to support a cohort of PhD students engaged in planetary solutions research. The new multidisciplinary fellowship was launched in partnership with Yale Planetary Solutions (YPS), which is spearheading the university’s commitment to generating innovative ideas in support of a thriving planet.

Each YPS doctoral fellow will receive a $3,500 increment to their stipend for each year of the two-year fellowship. Fellows will also receive a research support budget of $2,000 to be used at the fellow’s discretion in collaboration with their advisor over their time as a student. Doctoral students from all PhD granting programs across the university are eligible to apply for the fellowship.

New stipend supplements for grad students

Beginning in Fall 2025, the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences will provide stipend supplements on federal fellowships paid to graduate students to cover the difference between the federal fellowship amount and Yale’s stipend levels. The change comes as a result of the university’s decision to increase the Yale College class size. The university will commit additional resources to GSAS to help offset the cost of supporting graduate students. Stipend supplements for federal fellowships are an expense often borne by individual faculty members’ research funds. Graduate students serve as teaching assistants, supervise undergraduate research, and provide mentorship to Yale College students.
