New FAS dean of social science
The FAS welcomed Anthony Smith as the new dean of social science this January. Smith, the William K. Lanman Jr. Professor of Economics and professor of management, is an economist and experienced Yale leader who brings years of service and expertise to the role. His research spans microeconomics and econometrics, and his most recent work lies at the intersection of macroeconomics, climate science, and environmental economics. Smith will work with the FAS dean and colleagues across Yale to continue strengthening our outstanding social science departments, and to advance the initiatives that build our capacity in the data-intensive social sciences.
Book prizes for FAS faculty
FAS faculty regularly receive prestigious book prizes for work across the humanities. Recent prizewinners include: Sunil Amrith (history), who won the 2025 British Academy Book Prize for his sweeping environmental history The Burning Earth; Priyasha Mukhopadhyay (English), who won numerous awards—including the Modern Language Association’s Aldo and Jeanne Scaglione Prize for South Asian Studies—for Required Reading, her history of everyday writing in south Asia during the British empire; and Marlene Daut (French, Black studies), who took home the 2025 Haiti Book Prize for her outstanding biography of Henry Christophe, The First and Last King of Haiti. Congratulations, all!
Turning research into real-world impact
Yale scientists are turning their groundbreaking research into transformational technologies that will improve medical treatment for countless future patients. Among the FAS faculty who licensed their innovations to startup companies in 2025, four were honored at the 2025 Yale Faculty Innovation Awards for their inventions in fields including synthetic chemistry, molecular therapeutics, neuropsychiatric diseases, and DNA analysis. Victor Batista (chemistry), Craig Crews (molecular, cellular, and developmental biology; chemistry), Jon Ellman (chemistry), and Mark Gerstein (molecular biophysics and biochemistry; statistics and data science) were celebrated for translating their science from the realm of research to real-world application.
