Trip honors beloved professor
In May, Dean José García-León traveled with a cohort of students and Ole Akahoshi ’95CERT, ’97MM, director of Yale Cellos, to Natal, Brazil, to honor Aldo Parisot ’48Mus, a native Brazilian, renowned cellist, and the longest serving faculty member in YSM’s history. There, Yale Cellos musicians played in side-by-side performances with students from the School of Music at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte and offered group lessons and coaching sessions to participants in the Parisot Project, an all-girls string orchestra serving rural communities in the state of Rio Grande do Norte.
Wind quintet wins Fischoff Grand Prize
ZaRiah—a wind quintet composed of flutist Ben Smith ’26MM, clarinetist Katelyn Poetker ’26MM, horn player Oved Rico ’25MM, ’26MMA, bassoonist AJ Neubert, and oboist Jamison Hillian—won the grand prize and Wind Gold Medal at the 2026 Fischoff Competition. They are the first wind quintet to win the grand prize since 2002. The group also won the 40th Frances Walton Chamber Music Competition in Seattle, Washington, marking the first time a wind quintet has won that honor.
Music and fashion in concert
The Norfolk Chamber Music Festival/Yale Summer School of Music began a new collaboration with American fashion brand Bode, celebrating America’s 250th anniversary and the American West. The August 8 concert included an original work by composer and Yale School of Music student Nahre Sol based on research related to Bode’s fall 2026 collection. Sol’s work is the latest installment of the festival’s Musical Bridges project, in which new works are commissioned that place classical chamber music within a broader musical and cultural context. The August 8 concert was preceded by an interview with Emily Adams Bode Aujla and Sol.
