Archives of American pianist donated to Yale
Byron Janis (1928–2024) was an internationally renowned American piano virtuoso who overcame tremendous odds in the form of severe arthritis. Now his legacy will live on at the Yale School of Music. On February 5 Janis’s widow, Mary Cooper Janis, gifted the school with a portrait of her late husband during a piano studio class and spoke to students about their craft. The gift is part of a larger donation of valuable archival material, including photographs, videos, and sound recordings of Mr. Janis’s performances, his compositions, tapes of interviews, files of correspondence, personal papers, awards, autographed programs from various famous artists, some memorabilia, and two death masks of Chopin. The collection complements the Horowitz papers currently housed at the Gilmore Music Library at Yale University.
