A modernist above the mantle

When the Linonia and Brothers Reading Room reopened last week, visitors noticed a new addition above the room's fireplace. It's a reproduction of Bibliotheque (Library), a 1926 painting by Gerald Murphy, Class of 1912. The original is in the Art Gallery's collection. Although the painting's style may make it a surprising choice for a Gothic hall, its subject matter is appropriate—and it is a near contemporary of the room where it hangs (five years older, in fact).
