There has been a highly visible police presence on the New Haven Green since last Wednesday, when dozens of people were made ill by synthetic cannabinoids that were apparently laced with other substances. (The New Haven Independent has the latest information about what happened here.) The deans of the School of Nursing and the School of Public Health, along with other faculty, issued a statement on Friday calling for more public resources to deal with the national epidemic. “Without appropriate policies and adequate funding for services and prevention,” they wrote, “harm and even deaths within our community will continue.”
