Systems biologist will lead West Campus institute

Andre Levchenko has been named the John C. Malone Professor of Biomedical Engineering as well as the as inaugural director of the Systems Biology Institute at Yale’s West Campus.

Levchenko is engaged in multidisciplinary research to define molecular and cellular interactions from single-cell to multicell levels. He actively combines molecular biology, microfabrication, and imaging techniques with state-of-the-art modeling studies to investigate how living cells can sense their environment—and how this sensing ability helps them communicate and establish complex ensembles. He is the author of more than 90 published research articles and several book chapters, and serves on the editorial boards of PLOS Biology and Science Signaling, among numerous others.

As the director of Yale’s Systems Biology Institute, Levchenko and colleagues will try to identify the universal principles underlying functioning of networks and use these principles to design new biological systems or restore function to the ones compromised in disease. Another important focus of the institute will be educating both the lay public and professional scholars on the importance of systems approaches to understand core biomedical problems. The institute will also seek to translate research results into clinical and commercial applications aimed at improving the quality and reducing the cost of treating complex diseases.

Levchenko is the second recipient of what will ultimately be ten Malone professorships established at the School of Engineering & Applied Science through the generosity of John C. Malone ’63E.
