A native of Owensboro, Kentucky, Kevin Olusola ’11 played saxophone at Carnegie Hall when he was 17 for the PBS series From the Top, and he spent two years as principal cellist in the Yale Symphony. Lately, though, his musical interests have gotten more eclectic. In a series of YouTube videos, he combines "beatboxing"—a kind of intricate vocal percussion—with hip-hop tunes on his cello. Urged on by cellist Yo-Yo Ma and hip-hop pioneer KRS-One, Olusola says he's decided "maybe this is something I could do seriously." He hopes to continue his musical studies after graduation.
