Upcycled materials help art students

Painting students at the School of Art are reaping the benefits of renovations at the Yale Center for British Art.  The center recently donated more than 14,000 square feet of Belgian linen to the School of Art’s painting department for the students to use in their work. The linen, once used in the display of masterpieces by such artists as J. M. W. Turner and John Constable, was removed from the center’s fourth-floor galleries as part of the building’s conservation project and was to be replaced. The fabric, which School of Art associate dean Sam Messer calls “a prized surface” for painting, will be portioned and distributed to students on an as-needed basis.
