After a nationwide search, ice hockey player Mandi Schwartz '11 found a cord-blood donor in her battle with leukemia, but a transplant operation was postponed after tests showed her cancer had returned. Meanwhile, Connecticut attorney general Richard Blumenthal '73JD is investigating charities run by Tedd Collins IV, who was raising money for Schwartz and for Seun Adebiyi '09JD, an Olympic hopeful for skeleton (a form of tobogganing) who is also fighting cancer.
Sailing captain Thomas Barrows '10 was named Sailor of the Year by the Intercollegiate Sailing Association. Barrows, a native of the U.S. Virgin Islands, was lauded by the award’s judges for "a level of consistency over a large record that was astonishing." Barrows sailed for the Virgin Islands in the Beijing Olympics and hopes to repeat in London in 2012.
The women’s ice hockey team will have a new coach in the fall: Joakim Flygh comes to Yale from Harvard, where he was an assistant for the last three years. He has also assisted at New England College (his alma mater) and at Minnesota–Duluth, where one of his teams made the NCAA finals. He succeeds Hilary Witt, who resigned in May after eight seasons.
Men’s heavyweight crew coach John Pescatore announced his resignation over the summer after eight years at Yale. As coach, Pescatore persuaded Yale to enter the crew in the annual Intercollegiate Rowing Association national championship regatta instead of reserving the end of the season for the tradition-laden Yale-Harvard Regatta. His best year was 2006–07, when the crew was undefeated in dual meets, won a silver medal at the Eastern Sprints, and beat Harvard in the regatta for the first time in eight years. |
