Sports Shorts

The men’s hockey team was ranked sixth in a national poll and first in the ECAC standings in early February. The Bulldogs suffered an upset loss to Harvard in Cambridge in January but defeated the Crimson at Ingalls Rink 25 days later.

 

Yale hockey alumna Natalie Babony ’06 was selected to play on the Slovakian hockey team at the Winter Olympics in Vancouver in February. Babony was born and raised in Ontario, but her parents are natives of Slovakia.

 

Olympic gold medalist Sarah Hughes ’09 was inducted into the U.S. Figure Skating Hall of Fame in January. Hughes won her medal at the 2002 games before coming to Yale.

 

Bringing home gold at another competition—the Winter X Games in January—was 23-year-old Jen Hudak, daughter of Saybrook College master Paul Hudak. She won a skiing event called the Superpipe.

 

The men’s squash team had a near-perfect 11–1 record and a No. 2 national ranking as the season neared its end in February. Their only loss was to No. 1 Trinity.

 

Frank Keefe went out on a high note in his last home meet after 32 years as head coach of Yale swimming and diving. Both the men’s and women’s teams beat Connecticut in a February 6 meet to end Keefe’s last regular season.  the end
