It’s a fixture of New Haven’s Union Station: the old-fashioned schedule board, its words and numbers flipping and clacking to tell you that your friend’s Amtrak from Boston is 15, 20, 45 minutes late. But the next generation of Yalies will never know that particular pleasure. Connecticut’s Department of Transportation will replace the “antiquated” mechanical board—known as a Solari board after its Italian manufacturer—with two LED signs next year, part of a multimillion-dollar improvement package for the station. The Solari may leave a legacy, however. After outraged travelers started a “Save Solari” Facebook page, a DOT spokesman said the agency might consider an aural compromise: a recording of the clackety-clack sound to go along with the silent new signs. |
