New Haven among the least worst, recession-wise

It’s not exactly champagne-and-caviar time in New Haven, and some businesses are struggling. But a Brookings Institution report this spring on urban economic health placed New Haven among the 20 strongest of the nation’s 100 largest metropolitan areas, based on indicators in the first quarter of 2009. The report noted that employment was up slightly in New Haven, and that an economy emphasizing "eds and meds"—higher education and health care—was a stabilizing factor.
