Entrepreneur Earl "Butch" Graves '84, who was captain of the 1983-84 Eli basketball team, received the 2009 NCAA Silver Anniversary Award on January 15 in Washington, DC. Graves, who publishes Black Enterprise magazine, remains Yale’s all-time leading scorer, with 2,090 career points. Since 1991, he is the 13th Eli recipient of the NCAA award, which honors student-athletes who have excelled in their professions in the 25 years since graduation.

 

During a standout season for the men’s ice hockey team, goalie Alec Richards '09 has been especially noteworthy. After he stopped 63 of 64 shots during wins against Princeton and Quinnipiac at the end of January, Insidehockey.com named Richards its national player of the week. The Eastern College Athletic Conference named him goalie of the week.

 

On January 22, with the women’s basketball team rolling over Brown, junior forward Melissa Colborne scored her 1,000th career point. She is the 16th woman to do so in the history of Yale’s program, and the seventh to hit the 1,000-point mark in just three seasons.

 

The women’s Intercollegiate Sports Endowment and Resource (WISER), a fund created by former Yale female athletes and the Yale athletics department in 2005 to improve varsity women’s sports at Yale, sponsored a forum on February 11. Featured speakers were former Yale field hockey player Laura Pappano '84, co-author of Playing With the Boys: Why Separate is Not Equal in Sports; and former Harvard sprinter Theresa Moore, who showed her film License to Thrive: Title IX at Thirty-Five.  the end
