100 years—plus half an hour
March/April 2009
by Christopher Arnott
It’s only fitting that, when directing ticketholders
to their seats for a centennial concert on January 31, the Whiffenpoofs lost
their way.

Computer glitches resulted in double-booked seats, unreceived
tickets, and a delay of more than half an hour at the sold-out Woolsey Hall
event. But when the show finally started, the audience was all smiles. Three
Whiffenpoof alumni groups performed before the 2009 Whiffs made their
entrance, and more than 100 former members joined them for the closing
"Whiffenpoof Song.”

A golden jubilee
Fifty years ago, I stood with dozens of other law school students in the courtyard of the Law School, listening the Whiffenpoofs and their alumni sing at their 50th anniversary dinner. Their dinner was held at the Law School’s dining room, and the magic of their singing indeed cast a spell over those listening in the courtyard through the open windows. I seem to remember hearing that Senator Prescott Bush ['17] was there and that he may have been one of the original Whiffenpoofs. That concert was less formal than the one on their 100th anniversary, but no less enjoyable to their listeners.
