The
women’s sailing team had a standout autumn and was ranked at or near the top
nationally all season. Jane Macky '09, team captain last year, finished third
at the Singlehanded National Championship, and Macky and Marla Menninger '10
both won New England Intercollegiate Sailing Association Sailor of the Week honors
in November.
Women's
golf team newcomer Callie Kemmer '12 made an immediate impact. On the sport's
opening weekend, Kemmer won her first collegiate tournament, the Nittany Lion
Invitational. In other golf news, Jeehae Lee '06, a member of Yale’s Ivy
championship teams in 2003 and 2006, qualified for the LPGA 2009 tour. One of
Lee’s competitors will be tour veteran Heather Daly-Donofrio '91, a varsity
golfer and former head coach at Yale.
The
football season did not end well for Yale, but the Elis did sport the
top-ranked scoring defense in its division. It was captained by Bobby Abare
'09, the linebacker who led the Ancient Eight in solo tackles and was named to
the All-Ivy first team for the third consecutive year. Abare and record-setting
tailback Mike McLeod '09 both plan to pursue professional football careers.
Veteran
sportscaster Dick Ebersol '69, chair of NBC Universal Sports and Olympics, gave
the annual Kiphuth Fellowship Public Lecture on December 4. Ebersol, who said
he came to Yale with a passion for sports but "the hand-eye coordination of a
giraffe," spoke about the genesis of his career and encounters with such
superstars as Michael Phelps, Muhammad Ali, Michael Jordan, and Tiger Woods. |
