Hand-tied flies may be facsimiles of actual creatures, or, like the "Adams" fly in the vise shown here, an angler's idea of something irresistible. "The fish is the final judge, and it's not always a consistent judge," says Ray Pupedis, who tied the Adams and manages the Peabody Museum's entomology collection. His fly-tying paraphernalia is part of a Peabody exhibit (with the American Museum of Fly Fishing; through February 24) where visitors can compare impostors with real bugs. In the jars below, for instance, are real mayflies; just to the left of the top jar is a fly-tier's version. If you were hungry, which one would you eat?
