Since 1843, when Yale founded the first college boat club in America, crew practice on the water has been an autumn rite of passage for Eli men. Today the rite is the same, but some of the personnel have changed. Women's crew started at Yale in 1972; by 1979, the women had won their first national championship. They did not win another until this past May 27, when the undefeated varsity boat -- seven members of whom are in the shell pictured here on the Housatonic River last fall -- proved itself the fastest in the country (Sporting Life, July/August).
