Artist Saul Steinberg (1914-1999), best known
for his work in the New Yorker,
once said that "drawing is a way of reasoning on paper." Steinberg's
sketchbooks, which he willed to the Beinecke Library, show that process at
work. This pencil sketch is one of many similar pages in an undated 11 x 14
sketchbook that appears to be from around 1980. Other pages include panels
labeled "paper clips," "pasta," "rivers," "corks," and "lemons" (cars, not
fruit).
