In early May, as renovations to the subterranean Cross Campus Library
continued, Cross Campus was a bustling construction zone hidden from view by a
high plywood fence. Sidewalk superintendents found it hard to believe that
graduates would be able to assemble there for the commencement procession on
May 28. But in a matter of days, a new lawn was rolled out, the fence and
equipment disappeared, and the quad was nearly back to normal. (For aerial
proof, see page 55.) All is now verdant and serene above ground, but workers
are busy beneath, trying to complete the interior renovations on time for the
fall semester.
