Every afternoon when the women's hockey team gathers for practice, the skaters start with a little three-on-three -- brutal, fast-paced three-on-three. "We do this to work on creating plays in small spaces and offense off of quick transitions," says head coach Hilary Witt. "We want them to play hard against each other." The idea is to help the team overcome first-period sluggishness and hit the ice with intensity. Witt rewards the three players who win the most games during the week with a reduced conditioning regimen the next week. "When you combine that incentive with the fact that all of us are really competitive, it makes for some pretty rough games," says forward Kristin Savard '07.
As of the holiday break, the team had a 3-7-2 record and was hoping for better results in the second half of the season, which will be the 30th for women's hockey at Yale. But the Bulldogs did post a 3-1 win over Harvard on November 18.
