"Painted Ladies: Women at the Court of Charles II, 1660–1685" From members of the Royal Family to the King’s many mistresses, the women of the Restoration Court in England were both praised for their beauty and resented for the power and influence they wielded. A display of portraits of these women, along with texts written about them, offers a glimpse into the cultural and gender politics of the time. Beinecke
Rare Book and Manuscript Library Hours: Monday through Friday, 8:30am–5pm; Saturdays in April, 10am–5pm "My Soul Has Grown Deep Like the Rivers—Langston Hughes at 100" Acclaimed as a poet as early as the eighth grade, Langston Hughes (1902–1967) is perhaps best known for his poems reflecting the African American experience in the early 20th century. But he also wrote essays, novels, plays, short stories, and songs (he produced more than 800 song lyrics for jazz and pop artists, and Broadway shows), and he was a significant figure in the Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s. In observance of Hughes’s 100th birthday, the Beinecke is exhibiting material from his papers, which the author gave to the University over many years. Included are photographs, letters, manuscripts, books, and other items that document Hughes as a poet, an artist, and an observer of life. Art Gallery Hours: Tuesday through Saturday, 10am–5pm; Sunday, 1–6pm. "The Synthetic Century—Collage from Cubism to Postmodernism" An exhibition of collage, including early examples by Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso, concentrates on the ever-expanding repertoire of nontraditional materials used by artists throughout the century. The show traces the role collage has played in the art world as well as the ways in which the medium continues to challenge our perceptions about art. Chamber
