Through March 17 From members of the Royal Family to the King’s many mistresses, the women of the Restoration Court in England were both praised for their beauty and resented for the power and influence they wielded. A display of portraits of these women, along with texts written about them, offers a glimpse into the cultural and gender politics of the time. Beinecke

Through April 20 Acclaimed as a poet as early as the eighth grade, Langston Hughes (1902–1967) is perhaps best known for his poems reflecting the African American experience in the early 20th century. But he also wrote essays, novels, plays, short stories, and songs (he produced more than 800 song lyrics for jazz and pop artists, and Broadway shows), and he was a significant figure in the Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s. In observance of Hughes’s 100th birthday, the Beinecke is exhibiting material from his papers, which the author gave to the University over many years. Included are photographs, letters, manuscripts, books, and other items that document Hughes as a poet, an artist, and an observer of life.
