Maple
Cottage, 1836-1999
Preservationists fought hard to preserve this house by the noted architect
Alexander Jackson Davis, which was built in the heady days when Hillhouse
Avenue was an experiment in suburban living for intellectuals, entrepreneurs,
and inventors. Yale acquired the building in 1976, after years of alterations.
The University argued that the changes rendered the building unrecognizable
for historic purposes and tore it down two
years ago.
