Gymnasium, 1890-1932
Before Payne Whitney, Elis worked up a sweat in this Renaissance Revival palazzo
that towered over the surrounding houses. Inside were Russian and Turkish
baths, a domed "tepidarium" for drying off, a pool, bowling alleys,
rowing tanks, and a clear-span gymnasium topped with a skylight. Before its
demise, it was flanked by two wings of Trumbull College; it was finally replaced
by Trumbull's dining hall.
