"From Caligula to
Constantine: Tyranny and Transformation in Roman Portraiture"
A display of some
50 works of art focusing on the "bad" emperors and empresses of Rome explores
the role of portraiture as a form of mass media in the ancient world.
Typically, depictions
of a sitting ruler in sculptures, gems, and coins would represent him or her in
the most flattering way possible. But when a tyrant was overthrown in disgrace,
his portraits often were attacked or destroyed, or reworked into the image of
his successor. Such notorious figures as Nero, Domitian, Caligula, and Messalina
are represented in the exhibition, as well as many lesser-known rulers.
Hours: Tuesday through
Saturday, 10am-5pm; Sunday, 1-6pm.

"The Way of the World,"
by William Congreve, directed by Stan Wojewodski Jr.
The Rep celebrates
the Tercentennial of both the University and William Congreve's 18th-century masterpiece
with an opulent production of this social satire. Two lovers, Mirabell and Miramant,
armed only with wit and knowledge of the ways of their world, plot multiple courses
to betrayal, wealth, extramarital dalliances, and the first prenuptial agreement.
Foppery, scandal, and suspicion intertwine to show that the ways of this world
are strewn with Brits behaving badly. |
