"Call and Response: Journeys of African Art"

An exhibition of African masks, sculptures, textiles, and mixed media works, augmented by postcards, books, and maps, examines the effects of migration and other forms of interchange on African art and aesthetics.

 

Through December 31

"Love and Loss: American Portrait and Mourning Miniatures"

Some 140 miniature portraits make up this display, which brings to light the strong ties between the miniature and the history of private life in America.

"Edward Lear and the Art of Travel"

 A display of the works of Edward Lear (1812-1888) showcases his talents as a landscape painter and documents the artistic travels of Lear and others throughout the world.

"Back to Barthes: vingt ans apres"

Scholars from all aspects of the humanities discuss the many faces and voices of Roland Barthes (1915-1980), a French social and literary critic whose writings on semiotics made structuralism one of the leading intellectual movements of the 20th century.

Two performances of seasonal music have become traditions for the Glee Club: a concert of old Christmas music with organ and brass, on December 7 at 8pm, and the annual Messiah Sing-in on December 17 at 2:30pm. Both events take place in Battell Chapel; admission is free, but donations are accepted.
