Who Are We? American Values Revisited

In an era of instantaneous information and ideological gridlock, what values still hold us together as a nation and as a human community? In public life we move from one crisis to another, conflicts embedded in perennial tensions — individualism vs. community, secularism vs. religious practice, liberty vs. fairness, diversity vs. unity, choice vs. tradition. How does the citizen — how does the individual psyche – navigate competing values, claims, and interests? What do humane values look like today, whether in public or private?

You and your guests are invited to join our distinguished panel of Yale scholars on Saturday, June 8, 2013 as they grapple with these questions from different vantage points and examine what it means today to pursue the common good. Yale faculty include Miroslav Volf, Henry B. Wright Professor of Theology and Director of the Yale Center for Faith and Culture; and Mary Clark Moschella, Roger J. Squire Professor of Pastoral Care and Counseling.  The seminar will be moderated by Linda Lader ’08MDiv, President of the Renaissance Institute and Associate Pastor of New York Avenue Presbyterian Church, Washington, D.C.
