Yale names new general counsel

Yale has a new chief legal officer. Alexander Dreier ’95JD will become Yale’s next vice president and general counsel, replacing Dorothy Robinson, who retired in August.

Dreier is currently a partner at the law firm of Hogan Lovells in Washington, DC, where he advises educational and research institutions on issues including civil rights, research regulation, conflicts of interest, governance, international educational ventures, risk management, and privacy.

Dreier graduated magna cum laude from Harvard and received a master’s in philosophy and politics at Oxford as a Rhodes scholar, according to a Yale press release. Returning stateside, he earned a law degree at Yale and clerked on the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals. Dreier’s first exposure to the administrative side of higher education came at the University of Oklahoma, where he advised the president and provost on policy, helped establish an honors college, and taught a course on corporate governance.

“Alex’s goal, from his earliest legal career, was to practice education law, and I am delighted that this path has brought him to Yale,” President Peter Salovey ’86PhD said in the announcement.

Dreier will take over for acting general counsel Cynthia Carr in March, and his wife and three children will join him in New Haven this summer.
