Mike Richter — a three-time Olympian who also racked up an NHL Stanley Cup title, a World Cup MVP award, and an induction into the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame before graduating from Yale this year — has snared yet another honor:  the Lester Patrick Award for outstanding service to hockey in the United States.

Richter “was always the talkative, brainy guy during his 14 seasons as a goalie for the Rangers,” a New York Times sportswriter recalled — “the player who had to be pulled away from reporters because he was holding up the team bus, the Ranger who read voraciously on trips.”

Admitted to Yale through the Degree Special Student Program for older students after he retired from the New York Rangers, Richter majored in Ethics, Politics & Economics. He’s now playing for a new team: Environmental Capital Partners, a private equity fund that aims to “influence the world in terms of its greenness,” Richter told the Times.

Even before he earned his degree in politics, Richter was rumored as a Democratic candidate for congressional seats in two states. Let’s hope he hasn’t forgotten how to defend against slap shots.
